If you’ve ever prepped shrimp at home, you’ve likely noticed the thin dark line along its back. Many people call it the “shrimp vein,” but that’s actually misleading—it’s the shrimp’s digestive tract. This tube runs from head to tail and contains waste, which is why it often looks dark or gritty. The nickname stuck because of its appearance, but knowing what it is helps cooks make better prep choices. While it isn’t dangerous to eat, larger shrimp can have more noticeable contents, which is why many recipes recommend deveining to improve texture and presentation.
