A former U.S. Navy SEAL has marked the 15th anniversary of the mission that killed Osama bin Laden by revisiting new details about the raid and the communications used during the operation.

The operation, officially known as Operation Neptune Spear, was carried out on May 2, 2011, after a years-long intelligence effort led U.S. officials to a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where bin Laden was believed to be hiding.

The mission was conducted by SEAL Team Six, which entered the compound by helicopter under cover of night. According to accounts from former SEAL Robert O’Neill, one helicopter experienced a hard landing upon arrival, forcing the team to proceed on foot and clear the compound room by room.

O’Neill has previously stated that he fired the shots that killed bin Laden, an account also referenced by retired officials, though the U.S. government has never formally confirmed individual attribution of responsibility within the team.

During the raid, communication between the ground team and command structure reportedly included the use of the code word “Geronimo” to confirm the identification and neutralization of the target. The message was transmitted up the chain of command as the operation concluded.

Then-President Barack Obama later confirmed publicly that U.S. forces had killed bin Laden, ending a nearly decade-long manhunt following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

While the operation is widely regarded as a defining moment in U.S. counterterrorism history, public discussion of its details has remained sensitive, with differing views inside and outside military circles about attribution, secrecy norms, and the decision by some participants to publicly share their accounts.

The anniversary remarks have once again brought renewed attention to one of the most closely studied special operations missions in modern military history.
