For years, Donald Trump has criticized political rivals with sharp nicknames and often refers to Barack Obama by his full name, “Barack Hussein Obama.” Trump used the phrase frequently during the 2016 campaign and in later speeches, sometimes while attacking policies from Obama’s presidency.
During that campaign, Trump also made controversial claims about Obama’s role in global events, including remarks suggesting Obama was responsible for the rise of ISIS. Such statements drew widespread criticism and were rejected by analysts and political leaders.
Obama’s full name is Barack Hussein Obama II, with the middle name coming from his Kenyan-born father. Obama himself was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1961 to an American mother and Kenyan father. For years, a false “birther” conspiracy theory claimed he had been born outside the United States, a claim repeatedly disproven with official documents.
Many political observers say Trump’s emphasis on Obama’s middle name echoed that earlier conspiracy theory by implying he was somehow less American or linked to Islam. Critics argue the tactic aimed to raise suspicion, while supporters view it as part of Trump’s broader rhetorical style in political attacks.
