Psychological research shows that eye contact and other nonverbal cues play a major role in how humans signal emotion and social interest. Studies on interpersonal communication suggest that visual behaviors can influence perceptions of warmth, trust, and attraction, though experts caution that no single cue proves intent.
Research published in personality and social psychology journals has found that prolonged, natural eye contact is often linked to attentiveness and emotional engagement. Specialists emphasize that context matters: relaxed, comfortable eye contact in social settings is generally read as positive, while forced or overly intense staring can have the opposite effect.
Relationship experts encourage viewing eye behavior as one piece of a larger communication puzzle, alongside tone of voice, body language, and situational context.
