One Career Move That Could Lower Your Risk of Combat Duty If a Global Conflict Erupts

As global tensions rise, some Americans are discussing what could happen if the United States ever reinstated a military draft. Although there is no active draft today, the Selective Service System still exists, and Congress could authorize conscription during a major conflict. If that occurred, eligible individuals might be required to serve, though not all roles would involve front-line combat. Historically, people working in essential sectors—such as healthcare, engineering, education, and critical infrastructure—may receive deferments or be assigned support roles because these fields are vital to national stability during emergencies. While a draft remains unlikely without legislative action, experts say staying informed and developing skills in essential industries can provide both career stability and flexibility in times of crisis.
