Beginning November 1, 2025, some SNAP recipients will face stricter work requirements. Able-bodied adults without dependents may need to document about 80 hours per month of work, training, or volunteering to continue receiving benefits beyond a limited period. For people with unstable employment, health challenges, or other barriers, meeting these requirements could be difficult.
The policy changes may also expand the rules to older adults up to age 65 and adjust certain exemptions that previously applied to groups such as veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and former foster youth. Supporters say the goal is to encourage employment, while critics argue the changes could make it harder for vulnerable individuals to maintain food assistance during uncertain economic conditions.
