The man Tucker Carlson once called the toughest he knew has died, leaving behind a life shaped by hardship and grit. Abandoned as an infant and raised through foster care before being adopted, Richard “Dick” Carlson joined the Marines as a teenager and fought his way into journalism, diplomacy, and public service. Those close to him remember a fiercely independent reader and skeptic whose rough edges were tempered by faith and loyalty.
As a single father, he raised his sons while chasing assignments, turning everyday moments into lessons about history and human nature. His later marriage brought decades of stability and happiness, followed by a quiet period of mourning after her death. In his final weeks, surrounded by family and the dogs he loved, he chose lucidity over medication. A life that began in abandonment ended in deep connection, marked by resilience and devotion to those closest to him.
