Billy Joel’s life reads like one of his own ballads: tender, violent, and stubbornly hopeful. From a father who once struck him so hard he blacked out at the piano to a mother battling loneliness, alcohol, and likely untreated bipolar disorder, his childhood was a storm he survived with nothing but a keyboard and a will to escape. Fame didn’t spare him. Broken marriages, betrayal by those he trusted most, near financial ruin, and a descent into alcohol followed, even as arenas filled and his songs became the soundtrack of millions of lives.
Then came the diagnosis: Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a brain condition that stole his balance, blurred his vision, and silenced his tours. Yet again, he refused to surrender. With rehab behind him, alcohol abandoned, and his daughter proudly describing his daily therapy and fierce discipline, Joel is rebuilding. He may be fragile, but the fighter in him is tuning up for one more chorus.
