A Hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius has reportedly led to three deaths and multiple suspected infections, prompting international monitoring and medical evacuations coordinated by the World Health Organization.
Health experts say hantavirus is serious but remains a low public risk for most people. Emergency physician Meghan Martin explained that symptoms often begin with fever, fatigue, muscle pain, and nausea before potentially progressing to severe breathing problems. While the virus is usually linked to rodent exposure and has no vaccine or specific cure, officials stress that widespread public exposure remains unlikely.
