Washington was caught off guard. With a single presidential order, federal agents and National Guard troops flooded the streets, bringing both a drop in crime and a surge in fear. Some residents report feeling safer, while others are asking hard questions about the cost.
Donald Trump’s move to federalize Washington, D.C., quickly reshaped the city. Reports show robberies and car break-ins fell sharply, and overall violent crime dropped in a matter of days. For many, it meant relief after years of worrying about safety.
But the crackdown has also sparked backlash. Federal agents working alongside local police have driven immigration arrests to far above normal levels, turning a crime initiative into a broader debate over power, enforcement, and what public safety should really look like.
