In a surprise moment at the Dallas Wings’ home opener, former President George W. Bush was introduced as the WNBA’s first Honorary Commissioner. Wearing a custom jersey, he joked about finally taking a “bipartisan” job. The league cited his support for women’s sports and his viral 2023 Wings appearance as inspiration.
The announcement sparked buzz across sports and politics. Michelle Obama reacted playfully online, while Brittney Griner welcomed him with humor. Even critics called it a savvy publicity move likely to boost attention for the league.
Bush’s role will focus on ceremonial appearances, promoting media coverage, and designing a special “Freedom Ball” for the 2024 All-Star Game. The WNBA hopes the move will help spotlight its push for gender equity in sports.
