With no training and no plan beyond stopping the violence, 43-year-old shopkeeper Ahmed Al Ahmed ran toward danger as crowds fled Bondi Beach. Crawling behind parked cars, he tackled an armed attacker and tore the rifle from his hands, placing it on the ground rather than firing back. Seconds later, a second shooter opened fire from a nearby bridge, gravely wounding Ahmed and leaving doctors fighting to save his arm.
From his hospital bed, Ahmed told loved ones he would do it again. His family has spoken with pride, calling him a man who fled war only to show extraordinary courage in his new home. As tributes and donations pour in, many agree on one thing: when terror struck, Ahmed ran toward it so others could live.
