He was buried alive in his own fur.
Years slipped by while people walked past a moving mound of hair, never seeing the animal suffocating inside.
By the time someone finally stopped, even hardened rescuers flinched. Rotting skin. Mats grown into flesh.
Insects thriving where light never reached.
They called him Matt because his misery had turned into armor, but they refused to let that name be the final word on his life.
Under anesthesia, clippers carved through a history no one had bothered to see: a collar fused to raw skin, a leash buried like barbed wire, bruises mirroring every twisted knot of fur.
Piles of filth hit the floor until, at last, a fragile outline appeared—ribs, a quivering chest, a heartbeat that had refused to surrender.
When he finally stood, unshackled, he didn’t look like a cautionary tale; he looked like a beginning.
Startled by the lightness of his own body, he blinked into a world that suddenly felt wider.
In foster care, he is slowly rewriting what hands mean, what voices mean, what home can mean.
His scars remain, but now they are proof of survival, not a sentence. His story moves forward because someone finally chose to see him.
