At a cabinet meeting on March 26, U.S. President Donald Trump joked that he might one day run for president of Venezuela against interim leader Delcy Rodríguez, a quip that drew laughter but underscored how much the U.S.–Venezuela relationship has shifted.
The comment came amid serious discussions of Venezuela after U.S. forces captured former President Nicolás Maduro in January, an operation that upended regional politics and led to Rodríguez assuming the presidency under Venezuela’s constitution. The administration has since pursued legal pressure and negotiations with the interim government while highlighting strategic and economic ties.
Trump’s remark reflected his tendency to link his own political narrative to U.S. intervention abroad, even in moments focused on diplomacy and future cooperation.
