Turning on your headlights for about 10 seconds before starting your car can help stabilize the battery, especially after it’s been sitting in cold conditions. This small load prepares the battery for the heavier demand of the starter, reducing strain and potential voltage drops. The result can be smoother starts, longer battery life, and less stress on the car’s electronics. To do it, switch on the headlights briefly, wait, then start the engine, keeping other systems off until it’s running—an easy habit that helps protect your vehicle’s electrical system.
