Stephen Colbert’s life has been shaped by profound loss and resilience. After a plane crash killed his father and two brothers, he grew up in a quiet home with his mother, turning to Tolkien’s stories, faith, and eventually performance as ways to cope. Comedy became the tool that helped him live with grief rather than be defined by it. His journey from a Second City performer to a Comedy Central star and host of The Late Show may seem smooth, but along the way he faced health struggles, vertigo, and the loss of his mother. Now, as CBS prepares to end his late-night run, Colbert is shifting toward producing and supporting new talent, continuing to find meaning by transforming hardship into humor and gratitude.
