By mid-afternoon, much of New Jersey had slowed to a near standstill. Highways usually packed with traffic turned quiet under flashing hazard lights and heavy snow. Acting Governor Tahesha Way’s emergency declaration released critical resources while urging residents to stay off the roads, emphasizing that no trip was worth risking a life. Snowplows struggled to keep paths open as wind and ice quickly covered their work.
Amid the storm, another story quietly unfolded. Neighbors checked in on each other, messages circulated offering generators, blankets, or a place to stay if the power went out. Emergency shelters prepared for those in need. With daily routines paused, the state’s strength showed not in movement, but in communities supporting one another while waiting for the storm to pass.
