If you’ve traveled internationally or visited places like airports, hotels, or train stations, you may have noticed restroom signs labeled “WC.” For many people, this abbreviation can be confusing at first.
“WC” stands for Water Closet, an older term that refers to a small room containing a toilet. In simple terms, it’s just another way of saying restroom or toilet. The phrase dates back to the late 19th century when indoor plumbing became common and toilets were often placed in a small separate room inside the house.
Different countries use different words for the same place. In the United States people often say bathroom or restroom, in Canada washroom, and in the United Kingdom toilet or loo. The abbreviation WC is widely used in international locations because it’s short and easy for travelers from many countries to recognize.
