Iran’s parliament has raised the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz — a narrow waterway roughly 33–34 km wide that serves as a vital artery for global energy trade. Around one-fifth to nearly one-third of the world’s oil and significant liquefied natural gas shipments pass through this route.
Any disruption could send global energy prices sharply higher, with ripple effects on fuel costs, inflation, and economic stability worldwide, including in major importers like India. Analysts say the situation bears close watching given the strait’s outsized role in global supply.
