Toilet paper was introduced in the United States in the mid-1800s by Joseph Gayetty and soon became a household essential worldwide. Despite its convenience, its production carries environmental costs. Millions of trees are harvested each year, and the manufacturing process consumes substantial water and energy, contributing to deforestation, pollution, and carbon emissions. These concerns have increased pressure on companies to adopt more sustainable methods.
Bleaching and large-scale transportation add to the impact, releasing chemicals into waterways and generating greenhouse gases. As climate concerns grow, many consumers are reconsidering long-term reliance on traditional paper products.
Alternatives are gaining attention, including bidets, reusable cloth wipes, and toilet paper made from recycled fibers or bamboo. Bamboo, in particular, is promoted as a renewable resource that grows quickly with relatively low water and pesticide use. Manufacturers are increasingly offering bamboo-based options as a lower-impact alternative to conventional toilet paper.
