Renowned Spanish matador Iván Fandiño was killed in 2017 during a bullfighting festival in Aire-sur-l’Adour, France, in one of the most shocking incidents in the sport’s modern era. After stumbling when his cape tangled, he was gored by a bull and suffered catastrophic internal injuries. Though conscious as medics carried him away, he died before reaching the hospital.
His death stunned the bullfighting world and marked the first fatal goring of a matador in France in nearly a century. Tributes poured in across Spain, where he was remembered as a fearless and respected figure who repeatedly chose the most dangerous bulls. The tragedy also reignited debate over bullfighting’s risks and its place in contemporary society, highlighting the tension between cultural tradition and growing public opposition.
