As people age, many wonder how often they should wash their hair as texture, moisture, and scalp sensitivity change. Dermatology experts say most people do well shampooing about three to five times a week, but there’s no strict rule — the goal is keeping the scalp healthy, since that supports long-term hair comfort and manageability. Washing helps remove oil, sweat, and product buildup that can cause itching or irritation, and contrary to a common myth, frequent shampooing doesn’t force the scalp to produce more oil. Hormones and genetics control oil levels, while waiting too long between washes can lead to flaking, heaviness, and dull-looking hair, especially for those in warm climates or active lifestyles.
