An Air India flight issued a Mayday distress call moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, before crashing into a residential area, according to early reports. The Boeing 787, operating as Flight AI-171 and carrying 242 people, lost contact with air traffic control shortly after the emergency signal.
A Mayday call is aviation’s highest distress alert, used only when an aircraft faces immediate, life-threatening danger. Emergency crews responded to the crash site as investigators began examining what caused the incident. Authorities say details remain preliminary as the investigation continues.
