A dangling hose spotted on a highway bus tire might look like a mechanical mistake, but it’s actually part of a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) — technology that allows drivers to adjust tire pressure while moving. Through onboard compressors and air lines connected to the wheels, the system automatically adapts pressure to road conditions, improving grip, efficiency, and safety.
Originally developed for military vehicles operating on unpredictable terrain, CTIS later spread to logging trucks, farm equipment, mining haulers, and long-distance commercial rigs. The benefits are largely invisible: fewer blowouts, longer tire life, and better fuel economy, all reducing roadside emergencies and costly downtime.
What looks like a loose cable is really a quiet safeguard, one of many unseen systems that keep heavy vehicles stable and travelers safer on the road.
