Star Trek Day is being celebrated worldwide as fans honor the sci-fi series that reshaped television history. Premiering on September 8, 1966, Star Trek: The Original Series grew from a risky experiment into a global cultural force. The show nearly looked very different — its first pilot featured Captain Pike instead of Captain Kirk and was initially rejected by NBC before a second version launched the franchise. It also broke social barriers, most famously through Nichelle Nichols’ role as Lt. Uhura and the historic interracial kiss she shared onscreen with William Shatner. Decades later, the series remains a symbol of innovation, diversity, and imagination.
