Susan Hayward, born Edythe Marrener in Brooklyn in 1917, rose from modest beginnings to become one of Hollywood’s most powerful dramatic actresses, winning an Academy Award and earning multiple nominations during the Golden Age of cinema. Known for transforming a childhood injury into her distinctive on-screen swagger, she moved from modeling into film after unsuccessfully auditioning for Gone with the Wind, later gaining acclaim for emotionally intense roles in the 1940s and 1950s. Among the stranger footnotes in her career is a late-1950s rumor that producer Gregory Ratoff briefly floated the idea of casting her as a gender-flipped “Jane Bond,” a concept never realized but reflective of her outsized reputation in the industry. Her legacy remains defined not by gossip, but by resilience and a body of work that secured her place among classic Hollywood icons.
