Behind the sliding doors and humming belts, baggage handler John watches the same scene unfold every day: frantic faces at empty carousels, passengers insisting their suitcase “must be here somewhere.” Many of those bags, he says, were doomed long before takeoff. The bright ribbon that seemed like a clever identifier can jam or confuse automated scanners, forcing luggage into slow manual checks while its owner flies away without it. Old destination stickers only add to the chaos, sending bags down the wrong route or into security limbo.
Then there’s marzipan, the innocent treat that can bring an entire screening line to a halt. Its density mimics explosives on security machines, triggering full searches and sometimes calling passengers off planes in front of everyone. John’s advice is painfully simple: strip your suitcase clean, choose bold-colored or patterned luggage instead of black, and personalize it with flat paint or stickers that don’t dangle or snag. Turn the wheels upward on the belt to protect them, and leave the marzipan at home or in carry-on if allowed. Sometimes, avoiding travel nightmares isn’t about luck at all—it’s about the quiet warnings from the people who see our mistakes every single day.
